Taxonomy: Veniliornis chocoensis Todd, 1919, Malagita, Chocó, Colombia.
Forms a superspecies with V. kirkii, V. cassini, V. affinis and V. maculifrons. Has often been treated as conspecific with second or third of those, but differs in plumage details, in size and in habitat preferences, apparently also vocally, and is separated from both by Andes chain. Monotypic.
Distribution: W Colombia (W Antioquia S to Nariño) and NW Ecuador (S to NW Pichincha).
