Taxonomy: Ramphastos ambiguus brevis Meyer de Schauensee, 1945, River Mechengue, Cauca, Colombia.
A distinctive species within the so-called “croaking group” of Ramphastos species, which also includes R. dicolorus, R. sulfuratus, R. vitellinus and R. toco. Probably most closely related to R. sulfuratus; sibling species of R. ambiguus, though not very closely related to it. Was long considered to be a race of R. ambiguus, but differs significantly in several aspects, notably voice. Monotypic.
Distribution: NW Colombia (N Chocó) S, W of Andes, to SW Ecuador (S to Manta Real).
