Taxonomy: Stercorarius antarcticus b. chilensis Bonaparte, 1857, Chile.
Sometimes considered conspecific with all three congeners, and all four probably form superspecies; genus frequently merged into Stercorarius. Occasional hybridization with C. a. antarctica reported. Monotypic.
Distribution: Coasts of S South America, from SC Chile (Concepción) and S Argentina (Deseado) to S Tierra del Fuego. Apparently winters mainly along coasts of Chile and Argentina, extending N to S Peru and possibly E to W Falkland Is.
