Taxonomy: Ploceus rubiginosus Rüppell, 1840, Ethiopia.
Has been though to form a superspecies with P. badius. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- rubiginosus Rüppell, 1840 - W Eritrea, N, S & E Ethiopia, SE Sudan, NW & S Somalia, NE Uganda, Kenya (except coast and highlands) and interior plateau of Tanzania.
- trothae Reichenow, 1905 - SW Angola, N Namibia and NW Botswana.
