Taxonomy: Aulacorhynchus Derbianus Gould, 1835, no locality = Huánuco, Peru.
Forms a superspecies with A. sulcatus. Also related, less closely, to A. prasinus. Form described from C Peru as nigrirostris now lumped within nominate derbianus. Four subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- derbianus Gould, 1835 - extreme S Colombia S along E slope of Andes to C Bolivia (Cochabamba).
- duidae Chapman, 1929 - mountains of S Venezuela in Amazonas and W Bolívar, and adjacent N Brazil.
- whitelianus (Salvin & Godman, 1882) - mountains of S Venezuela (SE Bolívar) and N Guyana.
- osgoodi Blake, 1941 - S Guyana (Acary Mts) and Surinam (Wilhelmina Mts).
