Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- rubrocanus G. R. Gray, 1846 - extreme E Afghanistan and NW Himalayas; non-breeding N & NE Indian Subcontinent.
- gouldi (J. Verreaux, 1870) - E & NE Tibetan Plateau E to C China and N & W Yunnan; non-breeding Myanmar and NW Thailand.
