Taxonomy: Mareca castanea Eyton, 1838, New South Wales.
Sometimes placed in genus Nettion. Forms superspecies with A. aucklandica. Hybridization recorded with A. gibberifrons gracilis. Monotypic.
Distribution: SW and SE Australia, Tasmania.
