Taxonomy: Vireolanius melitophrys Bonaparte, 1850, Jico, near Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.
Genus formerly placed in its own separate family, Vireolaniidae; alternatively, is sometimes placed in a subfamily, Vireolaniinae. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- melitophrys Bonaparte, 1850 - interior S Mexico from S Jalisco S to E México and from E San Luis Potosí S to W Veracruz.
- crossini A. R. Phillips, 1991 - SW Mexico (Michoacán, Guerrero, S Oaxaca).
- quercinus Griscom, 1935 - S Mexico (Chiapas) and S Guatemala (Volcán de Fuego and other mountains).
