Taxonomy: Picumnus cinnamomeus Wagler, 1829, Cartagena, north Colombia.
Four subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- cinnamomeus Wagler, 1829 - coastal N Colombia, S locally to lower Cauca Valley (R Nechí) and lower Magdalena Valley.
- persaturatus Haffer, 1961 - Serranía de San Jerónimo, in Bolívar (NC Colombia).
- perijanus J. T. Zimmer & Phelps, Sr., 1944 - N shores of L Maracaibo (NW Venezuela).
- venezuelensis Cory, 1913 - S & E shores of L Maracaibo (W Venezuela).
