Babblers (Timaliidae)

Chestnut-fronted Shrike-babbler (Pteruthius aenobarbus) - HBW 12, p. 286

French: Allotrie à front marron German: Rotstirn-Würgertimalie Spanish: Timalí-alcaudón Frenticastaño
Other common names: Lesser Shrike-babbler

Taxonomy: Allotrius ænobarbus Temminck, 1836, Java.
Relationships of genus uncertain; most of recent studies suggest that it does not belong in current family, and recent molecular analyses indicate that it should be placed in the New World family Vireonidae. Proposed race laotianus (from Laos) considered inseparable from intermedius; recent review suggests that indochinensis and yaoshanensis might also be synonymized with intermedius (as influence of sample size, and variation with age and season, evidently not taken into account in previous taxonomic assessments). Five subspecies provisionally recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • aenobarbulus Koelz, 1954 - Garo Hills (Meghalaya), in NE India.
  • intermedius (Hume, 1877) - N, E & SE Myanmar (including N Tenasserim), N & W Thailand, Laos, N Vietnam and S China (W & S Yunnan, Hainan).
  • yaoshanensis Stresemann, 1929 - Yao Shan (Guangxi), in SE China.
