Chestnut-eared Araçari (Pteroglossus castanotis) - HBW 7, p. 264

French: Araçari à oreillons roux German: Braunohrarassari Spanish: Arasarí Caripardo

Taxonomy: Pteroglossus castanotis Gould, 1834, River Solimões, Brazil.
Forms a superspecies with P. aracari. Both belong to the “P. torquatus group”, which also includes P. pluricinctus, P. torquatus and P. frantzii, all being closely related. Contrary to some views, probably not closely related to P. azara. Nominate intergrades with race australis in S & E of its range. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • castanotis Gould, 1834 - S & E Colombia and W Brazil (along N bank of R Solimões-Amazon to lower R Negro), S to SE Peru and, in Brazil, to Acre and S Amazonas (extending E to R Madeira).
  • australis Cassin, 1867 - NC Brazil S of Amazon, E to Parintins, and S to NE & E Bolivia, E Paraguay, NE Argentina (Misiones), and SE Brazil (E to W Minas Gerais and W São Paulo, and Paraná to N Rio Grande do Sul).
