Other common names: Red-headed Laughingthrush; Black-eared Laughingthrush (nigrimentum)
Taxonomy: Cinclosoma erythrocephalum Vigors, 1832, Simla, Himachal Pradesh, India.
Genus traditionally subsumed in Garrulax. Until recently regarded as conspecific with T. chrysopterum, T. melanostigma, T. peninsulae and even T. ngoclinhense; race woodi of T. chrysopterum was initially retained in present species. Races kali and nigrimentum intergrade. Proposed race imprudens (from hills of Assam N & E of R Brahmaputra) is indistinguishable from latter. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- erythrocephalum (Vigors, 1832) - W Himachal Pradesh E to Uttaranchal Pradesh, in N India.
- kali (Vaurie, 1953) - W & C Nepal.
- nigrimentum Oates, 1889 - E Nepal E to Bhutan and NE India (Arunachal Pradesh, N Assam) and adjacent S China (SE Xizang).
