Other common names: Chestnut-banded Sandplover
Taxonomy: Charadrius pallidus Strickland, 1852, Walvis Bay.
Considerable confusion with nomenclature in past: name C. pallidus was considered synonymous with C. (alexandrinus) marginatus; present species was known as C. venustus, and S race as C. v. rufocinctus. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- venustus Fischer & Reichenow, 1884 - Rift Valley soda-lakes on border of Kenya and Tanzania.
- pallidus Strickland, 1852 - S Africa, on coast from SW Angola to Mozambique, and inland in N Namibia, N Botswana and CN South Africa.
