Other common names: Chequer-throated Yellownape, Banded Red Woodpecker
Taxonomy: Picus mentalis Temminck, 1825, Java.
Forms a superspecies with P. flavinucha, from which it is largely separated by altitude in small area of overlap. Birds of E & S Borneo formerly separated as race saba. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- humii (Hargitt, 1889) - S Myanmar (S Tenasserim) and S peninsular Thailand to Sumatra (including Bangka) and Borneo.
- mentalis Temminck, 1825 - W Java.
