Taxonomy: Lanius cha-bert Statius Müller, 1776, Fort Dauphin (Tôlanaro), south-east Madagascar.
Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus may be closest to Newtonia, which is currently placed in Old World warbler family (Sylviidae). Two subspecies recognized.

- chabert ( Statius Müller, 1776) - W, N & E Madagascar.
- schistocercus ( Neumann, 1908) - SW Madagascar.
