Taxonomy: Ardea pileata Boddaert, 1783, Cayenne.
Has been placed with night herons and even included in Nycticorax, but is not nocturnal feeder, lacks distinct juvenile plumage and morphologically closer to day herons. Monotypic.

Distribution: Basins of Amazon and Orinoco; from E Panama, E through Guianas to E Brazil, and S through E Ecuador to S Bolivia and Paraguay.
