Taxonomy: Merops cafer Linnaeus, 1758, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.
Forms a superspecies with P. gurneyi; some evidence of former hybridization between the two in Eastern Cape. Monotypic.
Distribution: S South Africa (Western Cape, SW & S Eastern Cape).
