Taxonomy: Dysporus capensis Lichtenstein, 1823, Cape of Good Hope.
Sometimes considered subspecies of S. bassana; alternatively considered to form superspecies with S. bassana and S. serrator; all three sometimes partitioned off in genus Morus (see page 312). Hybridization recorded with S. serrator. Monotypic.
Distribution: Breeds coasts of South Africa and Namibia; winters along African coasts, on W to Gulf of Guinea, on E to Mozambique, exceptionally to Kenya.
