Taxonomy: Thryothorus mexicanus Swainson, 1829, Real del Monte, Hidalgo, Mexico.
Probably closest to Hylorchilus. Other described races, all from USA, are griseus (Yakima County, in S Washington), punctulatus (Placer County, in EC California) and polioptilus (Chisos Mts, in Texas), but plumage variations of these are not constant, and no clear-cut geographical boundaries are apparent. Seven subspecies recognized.

  • conspersus Ridgway, 1873 - SW USA (from N Nevada and C Colorado) S to NW Mexico (S to C Baja California).
  • albifrons (Giraud, 1841) - S USA (SW Texas) and N Mexico (Coahuila, Nuevo León).
