Ovenbirds (Furnariidae)
Canyon Canastero (Asthenes pudibunda) - HBW 8, p. 302
French: Synallaxe des canyons
German: Rostschwanzcanastero
Spanish: Canastero Peruano
Taxonomy: Synallaxis pudibunda P. L. Sclater, 1874, Obrailla, near Canta, Lima, Peru.
Plumage similarities have suggested to some authors that this is the sister-species to A. ottonis; others have proposed that the two form a superspecies with A. heterura, or that latter is a race of one or other of them. Plumage differences of race grisior possibly due to clinal variation; further study needed. Proposed race saturata, described from W Peru, considered indistinguishable from neglecta. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- neglecta (Cory, 1916) - NW Peru in W Andes (La Libertad, Ancash).
- pudibunda (P. L. Sclater, 1874) - W Peru in W Andes (Lima).
- grisior Koepcke, 1961 - Andes of SW Peru (Huancavelica to Tacna) and N Chile (Tarapacá).
