Taxonomy: Picus campestris Vieillot, 1818, Paraguay.
Race campestroides often considered a separate species, but hybridizes with nominate in Paraguay, and probably occasionally elsewhere, and the two appear to intergrade. Birds from NE Brazil, described as race chrysosternus, considered indistinguishable from nominate. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • campestris (Vieillot, 1818) - S Surinam and NC Brazil (near Santarem); E Brazil (Maranhão S to Santa Catarina), N & E Bolivia (Beni, Santa Cruz) and C Paraguay.
  • campestroides (Malherbe, 1849) - C & S Paraguay, SE Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay to NE & E Argentina (S to E Río Negro).
