Taxonomy: Motacilla longipes J. F. Gmelin, 1789, Dusky Sound, South Island, New Zealand.
Race stokesii known only from three museum skins and few sightings. Race that formerly occupied Stewart I uncertain, assumed to be variabilis, which described from offshore islets. Three subspecies recognized.

- variabilis Stead, 1936 - Stewart I and outliers.
