Taxonomy: Lanius bucephalus Temminck and Schlegel, 1845, Japan.
Probably closest to the superspecies formed by L. collurio, L. isabellinus and L. cristatus. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • sicarius Bangs & J.L. Peters, 1928 - breeds S Gansu, in C China.
  • bucephalus Temminck & Schlegel, 1845 - breeds SE Russia (Ussuriland), NE China (S Manchuria S to Hebei and Shandong), Korea, S Sakhalin I, S Kurils, Japan (including many smaller islands), Ryukyu Is, Daito Is and Ogasawara Is (Bonin Is); non-breeding also E & SE China.
