Taxonomy: Picus tristis Horsfield, 1821, Java.
Named races micropterus (Borneo) and microterus (Nias I) considered synonymous with grammithorax. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- grammithorax (Malherbe, 1862) - S Myanmar (S Tenasserim) and peninsular Thailand S to Sumatra, including islands of Nias and Bangka, N Natunas, and Borneo (including Banggi I and islands off NE coast).
- tristis (Horsfield, 1821) - Java.
