Taxonomy: Tringa subruficollis Vieillot, 1819, Paraguay.
Genetically close to Calidris; also suggested to be intermediate between Calidris and Philomachus. Monotypic.

Distribution: Wrangel I and Ayon I E to R Ekvyvatan and N coast of Chukotskiy Peninsula; Barrow area (N Alaska) E to Boothia Peninsula, and irregularly N to Devon I. Winters from SE Bolivia, Paraguay and S Brazil to Uruguay and NE Argentina.
