Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- kangrae Ticehurst, 1923 - NW Himalayas (Kashmir E to Garhwal).
- pulcher Blyth, 1845 - C & E Himalayas E from NW India (Himachal Pradesh), and NW, N & E Myanmar, S China (W Gansu and S Shaanxi S to SE Xizang and Yunnan), N Laos and NW Vietnam (W Tonkin); non-breeding also E & S Myanmar and NW Thailand.
