Other common names: Brown Duck, New Zealand Teal; Pateke (chlorotis); Auckland Duck/Teal (aucklandica); Campbell Island Brown/Campbell/Flightless Teal (nesiotis)

Taxonomy: Nesonetta aucklandica G. R. Gray, 1844, Auckland Islands.
Sometimes placed in genus Nettion. Forms superspecies with A. castanea. The three races have been proposed as full species, although nesiotis doubtfully separable from aucklandica. Population of South I has sometimes been assigned separate subspecies, peculiaris. Hybridization (race chlorotis) recorded with A. platyrhynchos. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • chlorotis G. R. Gray, 1845 - isolated areas of North I and SW South I, New Zealand; formerly more widespread.
  • aucklandica (G. R. Gray, 1844) - islets off Auckland Is; formerly Auckland I.
  • nesiotis (Fleming, 1935) - Dent I (Campbell I group); formerly in Campbell I.
