Brown Prinia (Prinia polychroa) - HBW 11, p. 430

Other common names: Javan Brown Prinia, Brown/Javan Hill Warbler

Taxonomy: Malurus polychrous Temminck, 1828, Java.
Forms a species pair with P. crinigera; was for long considered conspecific, and the two are vocally very similar, but they differ in habitat and altitude preferences, as well as in breeding plumages, and more or less replace each other geographically. Four subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • cooki (Harington, 1913) - C & E Myanmar, S China (S Yunnan), N & E Thailand, Cambodia (Kompong Thom) and N & S Laos.
  • bangsi (La Touche, 1922) - SE Yunnan (S China).
  • rocki Deignan, 1957 - Lang Bian Plateau, in SC Vietnam.
  • polychroa (Temminck, 1828) - Java.
