Taxonomy: Trochilus Wilsoni DeLattre and Bourcier, 1846, Juntas near Buenaventura, Colombia.
Relationships uncertain within the complex containing present species, C. prunellei, C. torquata and C. inca; further studies needed. Forms a superspecies with C. prunellei. “C. purpurea”, from Popayán (SC Colombia), might be a dark variety of present species; alternatively, may be hybrid C. coeligena x C. prunellei. Monotypic.
Distribution: Pacific slope of Andes of W & SW Colombia to W Ecuador.
