Taxonomy: Pionus hæmatotis P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1860, Vera Paz, Guatemala.
Forms a parapatric species pair with P. pulchra, which has been regarded as conspecific. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- haematotis (P. L. Sclater & Salvin, 1860) - SE Mexico through N Guatemala to W Panama.
- coccinicollaris (Lawrence, 1862) - E Panama and NW Colombia.
