Taxonomy: Larus maculipennis Lichtenstein, 1823, Montevideo.
Sometimes treated as a race of L. ridibundus. Morphometric analysis links it most closely with L. brunnicephalus or L. novaehollandiae. Monotypic
Distribution: SC Chile and Uruguay S to Tierra del Fuego and Falkland Is; probably also SE Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul). Winters N to N Chile and CE Brazil.
