Taxonomy: Bucco Zeylanicus J. F. Gmelin, 1788, Sri Lanka.
Forms a superspecies with M. lineata, and in past often treated as conspecific; they are narrowly sympatric in N India and SW Nepal, but with no apparent hybridization. Possibly related also to M. viridis and M. faiostricta, but not very closely. W Himalayan birds (Kangra to Garhwal) previously recognized as race kangrae, but now considered inseparable from caniceps. Three subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • caniceps (Franklin, 1831) - SW Nepal and N India (Punjab and Uttar Pradesh S to N Maharashtra, Orissa and Bihar).
  • inornata Walden, 1870 - CW & SW India (Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka).
  • zeylanica (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) - S India (Kerala, S Tamil Nadu) and Sri Lanka.
