Taxonomy: Siphia brunneata Slater, 1897, Kuant’un, north-western Fujian, China.
Race nicobaricus has sometimes been treated as a separate species. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- brunneatus (Slater, 1897) - breeds SE China (Jiangxi and Zhejiang S to Guangxi, Guangdong and Fujian); non-breeding Malay Peninsula.
- nicobaricus Richmond, 1902 - S Nicobar Is (Great and Little Nicobar).
