Other common names: Wahlberg’s/Sharp-billed Honeyguide/Honeybird
Taxonomy: Prodotiscus regulus Sundevall, 1850, Mohapoani, west Transvaal.
No very close relatives. Forms named as peasei and adustoides are synonyms of nominate; caurinus synonymous with camerunensis. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- camerunensis Reichenow, 1921 - disjunctly from Guinea E to SE Nigeria, thence E to N Cameroon and W Central African Republic.
- regulus Sundevall, 1850 - EC Sudan and SW Ethiopia S (to E of forest) to S Zaire, Angola and NE Namibia, E to Indian Ocean coast and S to E Cape Province; recorded once in NW Somalia.
