Taxonomy: Anas Bernicla Linnaeus, 1758, Europe.
Race orientalis included in nigricans by some. Race nigricans sometimes considered a full species. Four subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • hrota (O. F. Müller, 1776) - N Canada, Greenland, Svalbard and Franz Josef Land.
  • bernicla (Linnaeus, 1758) - NC Siberia.
  • orientalis Tugarinov, 1941 - NE Siberia.
  • nigricans (Lawrence, 1846) - extreme NE Siberia to NC Canada.
