Taxonomy: Trogon asiaticus Latham, 1790, Calcutta.
Closely related to M. incognita, and a mixed pair reported in the wild, while race chersonesus somewhat intermediate between the two species; also related to M. franklinii and M. oorti. Has in past been thought to form a superspecies with M. monticola, and was sometimes even considered conspecific, but morphological differences seem sufficient to warrant separate species status. Form described as race “rubescens” from S Assam and NW Myanmar is a morph of nominate asiatica; laurentii, described from Yunnan, is a synonym of davisoni.. View all taxonomy...

- asiatica (Latham, 1790) - NE Pakistan E along Himalayas to N Myanmar and S China (W Yunnan), S to Bangladesh and C Myanmar.
- davisoni Hume, 1877 - SE Myanmar E to S Yunnan and N & C Vietnam.
- chersonesus (Kloss & Chasen, 1927) - E peninsular Thailand.
