Other common names: Crimson-browed/Little Barbet; Large-billed Barbet (“robustirostris”)

Taxonomy: Bucco australis Horsfield, 1821, Java.
Closely related to M. eximia, these together comprising the so-called “Mesobucco group”. Races and “population groups” connected by intermediates; some authors suggest race orientalis possibly better lumped within cyanotis. Birds from S Myanmar and SW and peninsular Thailand often treated as race stuarti, but apparently no more than intermediate form between cyanotis and duvaucelii. Other described forms include hebereri from Bali, considered synonymous with nominate; borneonensis from Borneo and robinsoni from S Pe.. View all taxonomy...

Other described forms include hebereri from Bali, considered synonymous with nominate; borneonensis from Borneo and robinsoni from S Peninsular Malaysia, synonymized with duvaucelii; and invisa from NW Thailand, synonymized with cyanotis. Form described from Assam as “robustirostris” long considered a separate species, but apparently matched by specimen from Laos, and these probably represent immature birds of present species. Six subspecies currently recognized.
