Blond-crested Woodpecker (Celeus flavescens) - HBW 7, p. 522

Taxonomy: Picus flavescens J. F. Gmelin, 1788, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Possibly forms a superspecies with C. castaneus, C. elegans and C. lugubris. Sometimes treated as conspecific with last of these. Nominate and race ochraceus appear to intergrade in CE Brazil (SW Bahia to Espírito Santo), where intermediate race intercedens seems to be absent. Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • ochraceus (Spix, 1824) - E Brazil, from W Pará (S of Amazon) to Atlantic coast and S to E Bahia and Espírito Santo.
  • intercedens Hellmayr, 1908 - W Bahia to Goiás and Minas Gerais.
  • flavescens (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) - CE & SE Brazil (S Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul) to E Paraguay and NE Argentina (Misiones).
