Other common names: Black Oystercatcher(!), South American Black Oystercatcher
Taxonomy: Haematopus ater Vieillot and Oudart, 1825, Straits of Magellan.
Some hybridization recorded with H. palliatus in zone of overlap. Monotypic.
Distribution: N Peru (Lambayeque) S through Chile to Tierra del Fuego and N up Atlantic coast to SC Argentina (Chubut); Falkland Is. Outside breeding season some birds move N to extreme N Peru, NE Argentina and probably Uruguay.
