Other common names: Black-winged/White-breasted Starling

Taxonomy: Gracula melanoptera Daudin, 1800, "Inde" = Western Java.
Sometimes placed in genus Sturnus, but appears behaviourally and vocally closer to present genus. May form a superspecies with A. burmannicus. Three subspecies currently recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • melanopterus ( Daudin, 1800) - Java (except SE part) and Madura I.
  • tricolor ( Horsfield, 1821) - SE Java (E of Tosari).
  • tertius ( E. J. O. Hartert, 1896) - Bali (including Nusa Penida) and Lombok.
