Taxonomy: Icterus wagleri P. L. Sclater, 1857, Mexico.
Related to I. prosthemelas. Two subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- castaneopectus Brewster, 1888 - NW Mexico in interior Sonora and Sinaloa and adjacent W Chihuahua.
- wagleri P. L. Sclater, 1857 - C & S Mexico (from Durango, Coahuila and Nuevo León) S across C Guatemala, N El Salvador and SW Honduras to W Nicaragua.
