Taxonomy: Synallaxis castanea P. L. Sclater, 1856, near Caracas, Venezuela.
Forms a superspecies with S. unirufa and S. fuscorufa; all three have sometimes been considered conspecific, but substantial vocal differences documented and reciprocal playback trials reveal pronounced vocal discrimination. Monotypic.

Distribution: Coastal range of N Venezuela from Aragua E to Miranda (E to Caracas area).
