Other common names: Arctic/Black-throated Loon; Pacific Diver/Loon (pacifica)

Taxonomy: Colymbus arcticus Linnaeus, 1758, Sweden.
Nearctic race pacifica often considered separate species (see page 162). Three subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • pacifica (Lawrence, 1858) - extreme N & NW Nearctic; winters Pacific coast of N America.
  • arctica (Linnaeus, 1758) - W Palearctic E to R Lena; winters along coasts of NW Europe, also in Black, Caspian and Mediterranean Seas.
  • viridigularis Dwight, 1918 - E Palearctic E of R Lena; winters NW Pacific.
