Taxonomy: Colymbus arcticus Linnaeus, 1758, Sweden.
Nearctic race pacifica often considered separate species (see page 162). Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- pacifica (Lawrence, 1858) - extreme N & NW Nearctic; winters Pacific coast of N America.
- arctica (Linnaeus, 1758) - W Palearctic E to R Lena; winters along coasts of NW Europe, also in Black, Caspian and Mediterranean Seas.
- viridigularis Dwight, 1918 - E Palearctic E of R Lena; winters NW Pacific.
