Taxonomy: Larvivora obscura Berezowski and Bianchi, 1891, Gansu, China.
Sometimes placed in genus Erithacus. Has in the past been treated as a colour morph of L. pectardens. Described form Heteroxenicus joannae, later placed in Brachypteryx, is a synonym of present species. Monotypic.

Distribution: Breeds EC China (SE Gansu, S Shaanxi and N Sichuan).
