Buntings and New World Sparrows (Emberizidae)

Black-and-tawny Seedeater (Sporophila nigrorufa) - HBW 16, p. 657

French: Sporophile noir et roux German: Schwarzmantelpfäffchen Spanish: Semillero Rojinegro

Taxonomy: Pyrrhula nigro-rufa d’Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1837, Chiquitos, Bolivia.
Molecular evidence suggests that genus is closely related to Oryzoborus, which should perhaps be subsumed within it; further, that both genera should be placed in the tanager family (Thraupidae). This species presumed most closely related to S. bouvreuil, and part of the S clade of “capped” seedeaters (S. bouvreuil, S. hypoxantha, S. hypochroma, S. ruficollis, S. palustris, S. cinnamomea, S. melanogaster). Monotypic.

Distribution: E Bolivia (E Santa Cruz; recently also Llanos de Moxos, in NE Beni) and SW Brazil (W Mato Grosso).
