Taxonomy: Myiobius atricaudus Lawrence, 1863, Isthmus of Panama.
Race portovelae sometimes lumped with nominate because of similarities in plumage and poorly defined geographical boundaries between the two. Seven subspecies recognized.

- modestus Todd, 1912 - locally in C & E Venezuela (N Bolívar).
- portovelae Chapman, 1924 - W Ecuador and NW Peru.
