Races sometimes considered full species. Two subspecies recognized.

Subspecies and Distribution:

  • nigra (Linnaeus, 1758) - Iceland and N Britain E to R Olenek, Siberia.
  • americana (Swainson, 1832) - R Yana, Siberia, E to Alaska; E Canada to Newfoundland.
