Woodpeckers (Picidae)
Black-rumped Flameback (Dinopium benghalense) - HBW 7, p. 546
French: Pic du Bengale
German: Orangespecht
Spanish: Pito Bengalí
Other common names: Lesser Flameback/Goldenback, Lesser/Black-rumped Golden-backed Woodpecker; Ceylon Golden-backed Woodpecker (psarodes)
Taxonomy: Picus benghalensis Linnaeus, 1758, Bengal.
S Sri Lankan race sometimes referred to as erithronothos (or, erroneously, as erithronothon), but psarodes has priority. Clinal decrease in size and variation in colour from N to S, and considerable individual variation, together with intergrading of populations, all combine to make racial delimitation difficult; indeed, W Indian birds sometimes separated as race tehminae and those in N Sri Lanka as jaffnense, but both probably more appropriately included in puncticolle. Four subspecies currently recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- dilutum (Blyth, 1849) - Pakistan.
- benghalense (Linnaeus, 1758) - NW & N India E to Assam and SW Myanmar.
- puncticolle (Malherbe, 1845) - C India S to N Sri Lanka.
- psarodes (A. A. H. Lichtenstein, 1793) - Sri Lanka (except N).
