Taxonomy: Psittacus niger Linnaeus, 1758, eastern Madagascar.
Proposed race barklyi of Seychelles apparently indistinguishable from sibilans. Three subspecies recognized.
Subspecies and Distribution:
- sibilans Milne-Edwards & Oustalet, 1885 - Ngazidja (Grand Comoro) and Ndzuani (Anjouan) in Comoros; population on Praslin, Seychelles, may have been introduced, but appears to have colonized Curieuse through natural dispersion.
- libs Bangs, 1927 - W & S Madagascar.
- nigra (Linnaeus, 1758) - E Madagascar.
