Taxonomy: Anas Melanocoripha [sic] Molina, 1782, Chile.
Believed to form a complex of species with C. olor and C. atratus. Sometimes placed in monospecific genus Sthenelides. Monotypic.
Distribution: S South America from Tierra del Fuego and Falkland Is N to C Chile and Paraguay; in winter N to Paraná, SE Brazil.
